Elevated vertical airport lights are navigation aid lamps installed on both sides and extension lines at both ends of runway and taxiway, used to indicate the outline of the airport. These areas are positioned to avoid contact with aircraft tires. Lamps in these areas are designed to be no more than 350mm higher than the pavement.

Inset lights are navigation aids installed at ends of runway and taxiway or near the center line. As these areas are frequently touched by aircraft tires, the part of the lights installed above pavement level is restricted to less than 12mm.

The PAPI system guides aircraft during approach at the appropriate altitude. The beam is split (white top, red bottom). Pilots adjust altitude based on the combination of red and white light colors seen from different indicator angles.
